| Viewsat Receiver Review Viewsat's are the creation of a company called Viewtech in California, the Viewsat receivers is made in Korea where they have been manufactured since the later part of 2005. The benchmark for Viewsat and the first success was the Viewsat VS2000 Platinum which was simply known as the Viewsat Platinum. During the late summer and Fall of 2005 the major competition was Coolsat and Pansat. The coolsat had a revolutionary guide and easy to use menu system compared to the older Pansats and Fortec days. Viewsat took these improvements and came out with the Viewsat Platinum which had the fastest guide and rich menu and guide and listened to what the consumer wanted and made a success of the Viewsat Platinum. In December of 2005 Viewsat launched the Black cased Viewsat Xtreme officially known as the Viewsat VS2000 Xtreme, with true hardware blind scan and the component out which never really worked too well but nonetheless took off and excelled in sales and popularity within the FTA community. Both these models of the Viewsat have now been discontinued and are no longer manufactured and so many FTA hobbyists are still running there reliable Viewsat Platinum or Viewsat Xtreme to this day and good for you. I still feel in writing this very sentimental to my Viewsat Platinum with the two RCA outs and and the original Little Silver Viewsat universal Remote. Soon to follow in the later part of 2006 came the Viewsat PVR 7000 dual tuner PVR and then the still number one seller the Viewsat Ultra! Immediately after the Viewsat Platinum in 2006 was discontinued an no longer a manufactured Viewsat. The Viewsat Ultra had a faster 200Mhz processor with double the SD Ram and a front loading USB port. Viewsat was the first FTA receiver in North America to introduce the USB standard to Free to Air Satellite receivers. Many followed and as of today later part of 2008 most FTA Receivers have a USB rather then using a serial cable for Factory Firmware updates. In 2006 the demand for the Viewsat Platinum was so overwhelming despite the Viewsat Ultra making over 65% of Viewsat sales and the Viewsat Xtreme trailing behind, causing Viewsat to lanch the Viewsat Platinum Lite into the US and Canada. The Viewsat Platinum Lite was only intended for Mexico and was not meant to be marketed in north America. The Viewsat Platinum Lite also called the Viewsat VS2000 Platinum lite has no component out like the Viewsat Xtreme, Viewsat Ultra, and no card reader as well as the older style remote as the original Viewsat Platinum. In the later part of 2007 Viewsat released 2 newer models the Viewsat Pro followed a few weeks later by the Viewsat 9000 HD. The Viewsat Pro has 2 USB ports and is faster then the Viewsat Ultra with a 260 Mhz processor and is a single tuner PVR unit. The Viewsat Pro is our top pick for a single tuner PVR it work pretty flawlessly with its PVR functions allowing you to reserve shows directly off the Program guide and record on an external hard drive. The Viewsat 9000 HD is not only a true HD receiver with amazing picture quality on HD broadcasts but it also has an ATSC tuner allowing you to view over the air HD channels and 2 USB ports so you can attach an external USB hard drive and also use its PVR functions. This year 2008 Viewsat Launched the all new Smallest version of the Viewsat family the Viewsat Ultra Lite, just like the number best seller the Viewsat Ultra it has a USB port no component out or card reader otherwise its just like a Viewsat Ultra with an older style black remote like the first Viewsat xtreme's. Viewsat currently still manufacture the following receivers below in order of lowest to highest Viewsat Models.
The Viewsat 7000 PVR is no longer manufactured but still sold as it is the lowest seller in the Viewsat range of products as it has a 100Mhz processor and feels like a dinosaur compared to the Viewsat Ultra and blazing fast viewsat Pro. It is however to some Viewsat fanatics an amazing receiver with brilliant picture quality and the ability to install an internal IDE hard drive and use as a true dual tuner PVR allowing you to watch one show and record another directly from the program guide making the Viewsat 7000 PVR very unique if you can put up with a slow guide and 45 minute procedure for downloading new factory firmware unlike the seconds it takes for any of the USB Viewsat models. Our overall take on the Viewsat range of currently manufactured receivers is if you want a good PVR and are not concerned about HD then the Viewsat Pro is an excellent choice, if you want HD and are looking into the Viewsat the 9000HD is a good choice with a PVR. If PVR is not on your hit list and you just want a good receiver the Viewsat Ultra is a great unit and still our number one seller, the Viewsat Ultra Lite with USB is great if you are on a budget or for the cottage or second receiver. Finally for those on a real budget and if you don't mind using a serial cable for factory firmware updates then the Viewsat Platinum Lite is based on the original Viewsat Platinum's that so many still use to this day and is a great choice.
